Button had earlier led the race and appeared poised to win himself but fell foul of a Safety Car incident that handed the lead back to Vettel. The defending world champion won his fifth race of the season after taking a gamble around the 3.340km street circuit that saw him run 56 of the race's 78 laps on one set of tyres. It paid off, though, and despite the Red Bull driver, Alonso and Button lapping nose to tail during the closing minutes of the race, he held on for his first victory in the Principality. The German would have had to spend a total of 62 laps on one set of harder compound tyres but was saved by another Safety Car incident six laps from home that forced the race to be stopped. Therefore, the question of whether Alonso, who stopped twice, and Button, who pitted for tyres three times, could have got past the one-stopping Vettel around the tight confines of the Monaco track remains unanswered
