Ricky Rubio and Tarvaris Jackson never had a chance to play in the Twin Cities at the same time -- a shame, since the two have more in common professionally than one might notice upon first glance. With Rubio maybe, possibly coming here this summer -- the "deadline" to sign him came and went Tuesday, though much remains to be sorted out -- and Jackson heading the other direction after not being offered a free-agent tender by the Vikings in March, we take a look at the connections between the two athletes:
Unknown quantities
The Vikings, in Brad Childress' first year in 2006, traded up in the draft to grab a little-known QB prospect in the second round. That player, of course, was Jackson. He was unbelievably raw, coming out of Division I-AA, leading to a nearly universal chorus of "Who is this guy?" mixed with "Childress had better be right."
Rubio had a higher profile, to be sure, when David Kahn made him the centerpiece of his Point Guard Extravaganza 2009, also known as that year's NBA draft. But he was still very much an unknown and intriguing player -- a then 18-year-old with all the potential in the world but also with so many questions about if/when he would come to Minnesota and just what type of player he might be in the NBA.
