Less than an hour after receiving a phone call that would change his life, Gerrit Cole called someone he knows well, someone whose life had changed in much the same way, albeit maybe earlier than expected.
Cole was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first pick of the Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft on Monday, then watched the other half of UCLA's dynamic duo, Trevor Bauer, get chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the third pick less than 15 minutes later.
The call was a brief but pivotal one they'd been looking forward to for a long time.
"I gave him a call right after he got picked," Cole said. "We were both ecstatic, just kind of congrats back and forth. I had a little more time to think about the conversation than he did, and I kinda jumped on him pretty quick.
"There really wasn't a lot of substance. Both of us were pretty much speechless."
Added Bauer: "It was a great day for both of us. I was kinda speechless right after it happened. I think he had my number ready because he called a couple seconds after it happened."
The phone call over, both players apparently speechless, they celebrated with their respective families. The terrific twosome became the first pair of teammates drafted in the top three since Arizona State's Bob Horner (No. 1) and Hubie Brooks (No. 3) in 1978.
Cole's fate was known ahead of time as multiple sources reported the Pirates had decided on the 6-foot-4,
