Aimee Messerschmidt didn’t get to celebrate her 31st birthday.She was in a medically-induced coma after suffering a series of strokes. Twice, priests performed last rites for the young mother. Her family was told to say goodbye.
Aimee had been exercising at the gym. She began to feel fatigued and started to feel like she was blacking out. Thinking she needed something to eat, she went home. The next day, Aimee couldn’t lift her arm to turn off the alarm clock. Her husband, after realizing that Aimee also couldn’t understand words, took her to the emergency room.
Aimee’s kidneys started failing and her blood pressure was dangerously low. Husband Jason Messerschmidt, an Omaha police homicide detective, knew those were signs that his wife was dying.
A series of tests determined a critical problem in Aimee’s neck. She was taken by medical helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center. Neurosurgeon Dan Surdell said tests showed
