U of I gets gameday cleanup ball

Enlarged photoIOWA CITY — Cleanup around Kinnick Stadium after Iowa football games should be done by the University of Iowa, not Iowa City, the city's zoning and planning board says. The board told the City Council the university has the “primary responsibility” for taking care of the “serious trash, litter and public urination issues,” and recommended city staff and university officials meet to develop a plan. The council is scheduled to meet Tuesday.
Fans and vendors crowd along Melrose Avenue next to the stadium during home football games.Neighbors and vendors say more trash cans, litter cleanup and portable toilets are needed. The zoning board said in a statement released Thursday in a council information packet that the university has primary responsibility for addressing those concerns.Meanwhile, the zoning and planning board has endorsed a permitting system for vendors during Iowa home football games. In April, the City Council considered banning vendors but decided instead to develop a permitting system. A public hearing on the topic is June 21.
Sara Hektoen, an assistant city attorney, said tailgating won't be affected.
