Tinkering from kid stuff to career

HASTINGS, Neb. — Since he was a boy growing up in Silver Creek, Fred Cuba has felt the need for speed.
“Growing up, we’d always had homemade minibikes,” he said. “We’ve always been around motorcycles and loved them.”
Enlarged photoFred and his older brother, Junior, learned to tinker with minibikes until they could get something to run. Their father, Isadore, helped, but his riding interests focused on horses.Though the boys lacked money, they had plenty of time to learn the inner workings of the bikes. They scraped together $50 to buy their first small motorcycle, then had to work to get it to run.
“Once you got it figured out, you could go ride,” he said.Cuba’s self-taught skills, along with subsequent training and seminars, have served him well during the past 33 years since he opened Fred’s Speed and Sport, where he builds and services custom motorcycles. After high school, Cuba worked as a motorcycle mechanic, then started his own business.
“It isn’t a big moneymaker, but it’s my love, and I’m good with it,” he said. “I love motorcycles. I don’t really know what else I’d do.”
