Events = Wellness

Each year, as our staff prepares for the Cornhusker State Games, we hear fun stories from people who used the event as motivation to get fit.  One of our favorites so far this year comes from Richard Friedrichsen from Clarks, Neb.
Richard called a few weeks ago to see if he could carry the Cornhusker State Games Torch for 26 miles to celebrate his 20th year of running.  He explained that 20 years ago, at his wife’s urging, and at the age of 50, he took up running.  His first organized event was the Cornhusker State Games Torch Run.  He signed up for one mile, put it on his calendar and began training.  The mile went great, and he felt great.
From there, Richard just kept on running.  The first three years, he lost 40 lbs and has kept the weight off.  Over the course of 20 years, he has completed at least two marathons in all 50 states, and he’s amassed 63 medals in the Cornhusker State Games, most in the 5K and CSG Track events.
The moral of the story is that events, both competitive and non-competitive, can provide great motivation to adopt healthier lifestyle habits.
There are 60-plus sports in this year’s Cornhusker State Games, which take place July 15-24 in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.  Besides the competition and participation opportunities, the Games provide a fun-filled and entertaining experience for the whole family, with a fantastic opening ceremonies on July 15.
