BANGKOK, Thailand – Watching Sepp Blatter win his fourth term as the president of FIFA, soccer's governing body, made me think of lollipops – and the story behind those lollipops does provide a grain of hope for reform of soccer's scandal-ridden governing body.
The lollipops I have in mind were made by a South African company ahead of the 2010 soccer World Cup. The lollipops’ wrapper displayed a soccer ball and a South African flag, which FIFA claimed, along with the lollipops name – “2010 Pops” – were ambush marketing. So the company was barred from selling them and competing unlawfully with FIFA.
