Bride and grooming: The pressure's on for Zara Phillips

Kate Middleton pulled off her biggest ever style challenge with aplomb in April – and now all eyes will turn to Zara Phillips, who’s tying the knot next month. But can the famously fuss-free royal hold her own in the bridal style stakes? It’s a tough act to follow, says Mimi Spencer

How galling. There you are, minding your own business, winning the occasional equestrian world championship and thinking in a leisurely fashion about getting married to a rugby player, when bam! Along comes your younger cousin and indulges in the biggest, swankiest hoo-ha of a wedding since the gypsies started to get hitched on telly. Not only are the world’s great and good (and Prince Andrew) in attendance, but the rest of the planet joins in too, throwing street parties, waving Union Jacks and sausages-on-sticks, taking a day off work and getting thoroughly sozzled in time for the kiss on the balcony. And we haven’t even mentioned the bride yet.
Poor Zara Phillips. Glorious as she is, with all those teeth and all that talent, she’ll have her work cut out to compete in the style stakes when it comes to her own wedding to Mike Tindall at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh on 30 July. Kate Middleton scored such a blinder on her wedding day, looking so picture perfect, the very spit of a Disney princess with her demure lace sleeves and handspan waist, that Zara can only prepare to be eclipsed.
